Thursday, May 21, 2015

Vaccines help prevent diseases caused by infection. Like all medicines, vaccines should be used during pregnancy only when it is necessary and safe. Ideally, a woman should have had all her vaccinations before pregnancy; but if a vaccination is necessary during pregnancy, waiting until the fourth month is generally good advice.

Some vaccines can be given safely. If you have not already been vaccinated, you may receive the following vaccines during pregnancy:  1. Diphtheria 2. Tetanus

There are also some vaccines are usually not given to pregnant women, but are safe to be used if you are likely to come in contact with the infection: 1. Hepatitis B  2. Pneumonia caused by Pneumococcus.

There are other vaccines sate for pregnant women. They are not routinely given, however, unless you are likely to come in contact with the disease: 1. Rabies  2. Influenza  3. Polio

Certain Vaccines should not be used during pregnancy because they contain a live virus, which might harm the baby you are carrying: 1. Measles  2. Rubella  3. Mumps

Exposure to measles, rubella, and mumps should be avoided during pregnancy. Women should be vaccinated against these diseases at least 3 months before they become pregnant. If you ate already pregnant but not vaccinated, you should get vaccinated right after you have your baby. Vaccination is safe for you and your baby while you are breast feeding.
